Tsunami Warning Service

The Connect & Protect Tsunami Warning Service is the nation’s first online targeted tsunami warning capability. The warnings are automatically distributed in near real-time directly from NOAA through the Connect & Protect network to community-based networks of public safety stakeholders. The service targets recipients based on specific geographic location, severity of incident, and issuing agency—ensuring the right information is delivered to the right individual at the right time.

Since April 11, 2005, Connect & Protect has been successfully processing NOAA Tsunami Warnings for near real-time warning to coastal communities. The service, and the use of Connect & Protect, provides an ideal tsunami preparednes and response solution for coastal communities with a broad group of public safety stakeholders. Coordinated through city and county emergency management offices, each community coordinates their tsunami repsonse planning, prepares supporting documentation, and disseminates this documentation to their community on Connect & Protect. The tsunami warning service enhances the NOAA warnings with the relevant preparedness and response documentation delivered with the warning. These documents include:

  • maps of area,

  • evacuation routes,

  • inundation maps,

  • school rosters,

  • emergency operations plans.
